About Us

We Believe...

...by empowering individuals through respectable wages, providing meals without shame, reducing food waste through the encouragement of personal responsibility, enhancing relationships with organic farmers, and creating an atmosphere where people from all socio-economic classes can eat fresh, organic food in-community, attitudes can change. And change in attitudes is on the cutting edge of change everywhere else.

 THE VISION

  • We are dedicated to serving local, organic unprocessed food
  • We are dedicated to eliminating waste in the food industry and giving all members of the community access to healthy, organic sustainable food
  • We believe we can trust our customers to be inspired, honest and fair in their exchange of money and/or work for the fresh, organic food we will prepare mindfully and heartfelt each day

  Business Model

One World Spokane has chosen an unconventional approach to eliminating food insecurity. Our model is based on the operation of One World Everybody Eats in Salt Lake City, Utah and SAME (So All May Eat) Cafe in Denver.

It is unconventional because there is no regular menu. Organic food is prepared in small batches with the seasons and served to patrons who choose their own portions of soups, salads, entrees and desserts. To help with portion control, we offer small, medium and large plates. Patrons are expected to pay a fair and respectable price for the food that they have eaten. Suggested prices will be given. We find the privilege of choosing portion size and prices leads to little or no food waste.

The community kitchen attracts an economically diverse clientele, which makes it sustainable and builds a stronger, more broad based community. There are volunteer positions available daily for those who want to earn meal vouchers or just contribute their time. We will provide one meal voucher for each hour of service. Children eight years and under can eat on their parent's voucher. We will serve a complimentary meal that is available to everyone and is the perfect nutritional solution for those with little time and money.

We Teach...

Social Sustainability
We strongly believe in a "hand up, not a hand out" model. Not only do we provide volunteer opportunities to earn meal vouchers, we provide training to our volunteers in the food industry as dishwashers, prep cooks and cooks. We will also provide life skills classes. Participants will learn how to grow, prepare or preserve Organic Foods. In turn this will help people to stretch their food budget and eat healthy.

We Preserve...

Environmental Sustainability
We use local organic produce from local farmers. We grow a small amount of produce in our own garden using compost from kitchen scraps and donate the rest to community food banks.

We Serve...

Economic Responsibility
We believe in being sustainable and as an economic contributor in our community at large as well as a charitable venue.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY KITCHEN?

One World Spokane is a non profit Organic
Community Kitchen with a purpose, where you choose your portions of creatively crafted food according to your appetite and your budget. Alternatively you can volunteer in exchange for a meal.

Patrons will have the opportunity to pay above the suggested prices to help support our volunteer meals and complimentary dishes.

The One World Cafe has a daily complimentary dish. This dish is available to everyone as an offering only or combined with other choices for those on a small budget. Since opening in October, we have provided 5,459 complimentary meals and 6234 full volunteer meals.

The One World concept is about Organic, Local Food, Sustainability, Partnerships, Building Community, Reducing waste and providing our customers with delicious, vibrant cuisine & an exceptional dining experience where everyone "breaks bread" together.
If you enjoy our food, atmosphere and philosophy,
please tell a friend. Word of mouth is our best advertising.

We believe everyone should be able to eat healthy & organic.

"The identity of a family, a country, and a nation all gravitate around food: at the table rituals and moments of complex cultural exchange take place. Eating in a harmonious way amongst ourselves and with others becomes a way to share a common well being."

Carlo Petrini founder of Slow Food
